Amanda Haertling Thein is an associate professor of language, literacy and culture at the University of Iowa. Her research investigates multicultural literature instruction as well as social and cultural aspects of middle and high school students’ responses to literature. Dr. Thein is a former high school English teacher and a 2007 recipient of the National Council of Teachers of English’s Promising Researcher Award. Her previous work has been published in the Journal of Literacy Research, the Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, The English Journal, and English Education. She is co-author (with Richard Beach and Allen Webb) of Teaching to Exceed the English Language Arts Common Core State Standards: A Literacy Practices Approach for 6-12 Classrooms (Routledge/Taylor & Francis, 2012).
