Hilary Janks is an Professor in the School of Education at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.

She has published over 60 articles/chapters in books and is the editor and an author of the Critical Language Awareness Series of workbooks. She is also the author of Literacy and Power and has edited a new set of critical literacy texts and activities, provisionally titled Taking a Stand which has been accepted for publication by Routledge.

Her teaching and research are in the areas of language and education in multilingual classrooms, language policy and critical literacy. Her work is committed to a search for equity and social justice in context of poverty.
