I was born in England of Polish parents who settled here after the Second World War. I went to grammar school in Coventry and Leamington Spa before going on to the universities of York and Leeds.

After twelve years of teaching English, drama and media studies in secondary schools, in 1991 I registered for a PhD at the University of Warwick and began work there shortly afterwards as a research associate on a major research project into the teaching of language in the English curriculum.

Since then, I have worked as a Senior Lecturer in English and Education at University College Northampton (1993-4), and as Senior Lecturer and Principal Lecturer in English at the University of Wolverhampton (1994-2005), before taking up my post in the English Studies group at Aston in September 2005.
