Rebecca S. Wheeler is Associate Professor of English at Christopher Newport University, Newport News, VA, USA.

She was on leave from CNU in 2005-2006 to work as Research Scientist in the Program for Research and Evaluation in Public Schools (PREPS) of the Darden College of Education at Old Dominion University.

Wheeler holds a BA from the University of Virginia, an MS from Georgetown University and a PhD from the University of Chicago.

She is a literacy consultant with the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and has consulted with urban schools (K–16) from New York to New Orleans on reducing the achievement gap in African American classrooms.

Wheeler has published numerous articles and book chapters on code-switching in urban classrooms. Her book, Code-switching: Teaching Standard English in Urban Classrooms, co-authored with Newport News elementary collaborator, Rachel Swords, appeared from the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) in April 2006.
