Julia Davies is based at The University of Sheffield in the UK where she directs the online MA in New Literacies and the MA in Educational Research.

Her research focuses on the relationship between social learning and online digital practices; she is interested in looking at presentations of the self online; ways in which our notions of literacy are developing; definitions of text and the ways in which online affordances provide new ways of narrating ourselves and connecting with others.

Her work on social networking sites has looked at ways in which digital technologies and online networking provides people with new ways of looking at the world and re-considering their positionality; other projects include explorations of academic blogging, (with Guy Merchant); critical literacies in the classroom; the use of digital image making to explore children’s perceptions of school cultures; explorations of the nature of online and blended learning courses.

Forthcoming work includes a book with Guy Merchant (2008) Web 2.0 for Schools: Learning and social participation. New York: Peter Lang and "Pay and display": The digital literacies of online shoppers’, in C. Lankshear and M. Knobel, M. (Eds.), Digital literacies: Concepts, policies and practices.
