Dr. Elizabeth Hirst has taught and researched in the areas of first and second language literacy, Languages other than English (LOTE) and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), with a focus on primary and tertiary classrooms.

Her research is centrally concerned with the interrelationships between changing local and global contexts with a focus on learning and identity.

In her research she examines the construction of identities and the ways in which the diverse cultural and linguistic resources students and teachers bring to the classroom come into dialogue.
