Previously, Madeyandile Mbelani taught English in a rural high school for 14 years, and lectured Communication Studies and Academic Literacy at Walter Sisulu University for two years.

In 2008, he became a research officer in the Institute for the Study of English in Africa (ISEA) at Rhodes University.

In his recently completed masters' study, he explored meaningful ways to teach visual literacy, a new component of the South African curriculum. His research interests lie in the promotion of teaching and learning of visual/media literacy, assessment for learning, and action research.
