I have taught in secondary schools, adult migrant education and higher education in the UK and Australia.

I have worked in English language teaching, TESOL and Applied Linguistics since the 1980s.

My interest in language education in developing countries led to teaching posts in Mozambique, Cameroon and Timor-Leste.

These experiences inspired an interest in colonial languages and their impact on local language ecologies.

My research has focused on Language Policy and Sociolinguistics.

My doctoral thesis used critical ethnographic methods to examine past and present language policy, planning and practices in Timor-Leste.

In addition I have an ongoing interest in the teaching and learning of languages, particularly teaching methods, curriculum and materials design.
