Helen is a National Trainer/Co-ordinator in the European Centre for Reading Recovery. Key areas of work include teacher professional learning and field support for teaching professionals. Helen teaches on the MA: Literacy Learning and Literacy Difficulties and leads the Literacy Development module which focuses on current theories of early literacy development from the perspective of cognitive psychology. Helen has extensive experience of primary teaching and school leadership in both Australia and England and has also worked in school improvement, specialising in literacy and literacy difficulties and developing action research with teachers. Early research interests included multi-modal approaches to literacy and gender effects in reading and writing. Current doctoral research focuses on the learning of teacher educators in Reading Recovery, exploring the role of close observation and socially constructed learning in the development of critical reflection on practice.
