Beryl Exley is an Associate Professor of English Curriculum and Literacy Teaching and Learning within the Faculty of Education at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia. She has a special interest in literacy as a vehicle for social justice in the early and primary years of schooling. This paper reports data collected as part of an Australian Research Council funded project (LP0990289, Woods et al.). We thank the teachers, administrators and students and the Elders and community members as well as the Queensland Teachers Union and our research colleagues who are our research partners on this project.
