Mary Macken-Horarik has worked for many years in the field of English literacy education and English as a teacher, applied linguist and now teacher educator.

She is an educational linguist with a special interest in systemic functional linguistics.

Her current research focusses on the use of systemic functional linguistics as a metalanguage for understanding both achievements and difficulties in students' reading and writing practices. Her recent work focusses on senior English.
